We so are grateful to have been part of the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association's celebration Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration, and one of the 91 organizations and groups united for equity, justice, and resources for all. (The number 91 is linked to the number of years since King's birth that his life and memory has helped guide and uplift community.)
The event included a community meal and free books for the first 150 kids. Many people and organizations including ours brought much needed donations for the food drive. We also sponsored a postcard activity that asked participants "How can we build a more welcoming world" and hung the answers for all to read and contemplate.
The packed auditorium was treated to a musical performance by the Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus (photo above); storytelling by Gigi Bisong (photo below) who spoke about her family's participation in school desegregation; a reading of Dr. King’s speech: “Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution” by Fartun Weli, Founder & Executive Director of Isuroon (photo below); and closing remarks and musical praise by Nicoshia & Relentless Worship (too busy celebrating to take a photo).
We also want to give a special thank you to all the amazing Americorps Minnesota members who made this event a success including Molly, Karina and Courtney who helped us set up and take down our postcard installation.
We look forward to continuing Dr. King's call to unite in service to our community in 2020.
